Fiona McLay
As the mother of a teenage boy and an educator, safeguarding and keeping children safe is a major priority for me – one that I am deeply passionate about. This commitment has been the driving force behind this project. I have worked with vulnerable children and spent years teaching, and adapting learning resources to ensure children can access the curriculum in creative and engaging ways. The benefits of immersing children and young people in interactive experiences is evident.
As both a parent and a professional, I’ve often faced challenging situations and had to navigate sensitive conversations. I understand the anxiety of being a parent and the dangers and risks children face, both on the streets and behind screens. Motivated by these experiences, I decided to put my skills and knowledge to the test by designing something that could contribute to a solution.
In response to the knife crime epidemic and broader child safety issues, I created My Streets during my final year at the University of Portsmouth. I believe that early intervention is key, and My Streets serves as a preventive measure in the form of conversation cards. I am dedicated to community safety initiatives and working collaboratively with organisations to promote community cohesion. I am immensely grateful to all the children, professionals, and contributors who have been part of the My Streets journey; Positive Choices Save Lives.
